On p227 1-23 odd, can we show our work as fractions, or do we have to show it as decimals?

Adam,
You have to change the fractions to decimals and compare them that way. I know you weren't here, but we did practice in class. Check your journal.... top number divided by bottom number. We also did a journal entry on Rational Numbers so you might be better off talking to me tomorrow at recess.

Ms. Stewart's CAUGHT UP CLUB

This club is designed to recognize and reward students who:

* do their best.

* are Responsible & Ready to Learn.

* have ALL assignments in, with passing scores by the end of the week.

* return KenGarff Reading summaries each Monday morning.

They will also receive special privileges which may or may not be announced beforehand.

I will add/remove members each weekend as assignments are recorded. That means each student has a fresh start each week. I hope to see my whole class in this club VERY SOON!

(I reserve the right to tweak this club as needed.)

Safety Patrol Schedule

Please make sure you are at school by 8:10 each morning to help set up. If you are unable to work a specific day it is YOUR JOB to find a substitute!

Kris and Moira together have 9 beans. Together, Erin and Jay have 16, while Kris and Erin together have 14. Erin and Moira together have 15 beans. Jay and Moira together have 11. No two kids have the same amount, but Kris and Jay together have the same Erin. There are a total of 25 beans. How many beans does each child have?

(We will get a start this one in class together on Wednesday.)

Victor the vampire lived for 200 years in his first life. Each life after was only 1/2 as long as the previous life. How many lives did Victor live that were more than one year long?

Rob cleans yards on Saturday. One Saturday morning he started out with $5 in his pocket. He cleaned 3 yards, charging the same for each. He ended up with $23 in his pocket. How much did Rob have in his pocket after he cleaned the first yard?

A car and a motorcycle are traveling in opposite directions at 60mph. About how far apart will they be seven minutes after they pass each other?

Week 12

Jerry was born in 1980 and his sister was born in 1987. In what year will Jerry be twice as old as his sister?

Aunt Isabella sends money to you on your birthday. She gives you $10 on your first birthday. On each birthday thereafter, you receive $20 more than the previous birthday. How old will you be when you have received a total of $4000 from Aunt Isabella?

Week 8

A diner has 19 booths. Some seat 4 people and some seat 5 people. Every booth is full and there are 84 customers in the diner. How many booths seat 4 people?

Week 9

On a digital clock, how many palindromes occur in a 12 hour period?

Note to Parents:

The Hope of America Award is a Kiwanis Club award given upon recommendation of the teachers and principal to sixth grade students who have achieved well in leadership potential, service, scholarship, and moral character while they have been in elementary school. These students show great promise of contributing to the future of the community and our nation.

At your school, students apply for this award. The student must fulfill certain requirements in order to be recipients of the award. ALL STUDENTS WHO MEET THESE REQUIREMENTS WILL RECEIVE THIS AWARD. The requirements are as follows:

1. An application form must be submitted BEFORE the specified deadline.

2. Demonstration of academic competence in elementary school.

3. Demonstration of leadership, good citizenship, self discipline, and self reliance.

4. A teacher recommendation.

5. The completion of a service project, which involves planning it, advisor’s approval of the project, performing the required service, and writing a report about the project upon completion. Minimum hours of service for this project is 12 hours, by the student applicant.

6. A 250 word essay on citizenship.

Each sixth grade student at our school is given this packet of information. Each student will decide for him/herself whether he/she would like to apply for the award. There will be no further involvement from the staff at the school; except to receive your application, your plans, and your reports, as required by the schedule. It is our feeling that students deserving of this award should be able to follow through with the completion of the requirements on their own. The teachers will determine whether or not you have met the standards.

APPLICANT GUIDANCE:

Responsibility for completion of ALL requirements rests with the applicant.

The awards will be given at the Awards Assembly at the end of the year.

DEADLINES:

Applications, Teacher Recommendation, and Project Plan are due FRIDAY, December 2, 2011.

Project Summary Report and Essay are due MONDAY, APRIL 9, 2012
